Jay-Z’s appearance at Glastonbury has shown a diplomatic side to young hov that I don’t think has been fully revealed before. After Noel Gallagher made some disparaging comments about his headlining, he came back with a thoughtful and well worded response:
“We don’t play guitars, Noel, but hip hop has put in its work like any other form of music. This headline show is just a natural progression. Rap music is still evolving. From Afrika Bambaataa DJ-ing in the Bronx and Run DMC going platinum, to Jazzy Jeff And The Fresh Prince winning the first rap Grammy, I’m just next in the line. We have to respect each other’s genre of music and move forward.”
Having done that, to show he wasn’t just a soft touch, he opened with Wonderwall - Jay-Z doesn’t get played, son. Once again, after Amy Winehouse called Kanyeezee a bad word during her set, he exhibited some hip hop restraint:
“She said something about Kanye late on (in her set) but I didn’t hear it and I don’t agree with it. He’s my brother and the biggest artist on Roc-A-Fella (records) right now,” explained Hov to the network. “I guess I should hook them up because he’s a great guy too. I don’t know what the problem is- I don’t know where that (comment) came from.”
Jiggaman: shoe-in for the foreign secretary job in the Obama administration. Replace the names above with middle eastern countries and Jay has basically created world peace.
Saw Atmosphere (with Ant!) & Brother Ali at the Komedia last night, supported by Kidz in the Hall. KitH were good, but I don’t think many people there were familiar with them. I hadn’t heard any of their stuff before but it seemed not bad. Slug and Ali killed it though, the first half was mostly medleys, Ant mixing the beats into one another, followed by a few Ali only songs then some Atmosphere classics.
Amusingly, I did overhear a group of lads saying “I’ve got to get a photo with The Brother”, prompting a wry smile from the DJ part of kidz in the hall (they did get the photo later you’ll be glad to know). Overall, I was impressed that Ant managed to go the whole gig without smoking (though he did say it was “difficult”), and it was also nice to see him and Ali sitting outside at a pub down the road when we were walking to the gig. No turning up an hour late for them (Guru - take note).
The new Girl Talk album is out for ePurchase right now. It’s a choose your own price deal, pay over $10 and you get a physical CD when it comes out (for europe it’s $6 shipping). There individual files and continuous mix as well. All in all, a cracking deal!
I know I always say this, but there are some proper shoddy mixes in this one. I even considered not posting it, but then I realised that this is no time to start having quality control.
While listening to Dj Dee-Ville’s absolutely superb Big Daddy Kane mix, I was surprised to hear a line I’d previously missed in Another Victory:
When I’m ridin’ in my Volvo, cops harass me.
They never ride past me, they hound me like Lassie
Yet another example where my world view and that of 80s rappers diverges, in this case in the area of the status of various brands of car. While googling to confirm my listening, I also found that King Asiatic mentioned his preferred Swedish whip in ‘Mr Pitiful’:
I bought myself a condo out in Queens
A plush white Volvo and drove off the scene
I wanted to add a shared folder to a linux VMWare image in VMWare player, and got thoroughly nowhere. Thanks to the magic of EasyVMX though, I know now the secritz. In the .vmx file of the VM , add:
Restart the VM and all is joy. You will need VMWare tools on there, which can be installed, or in most cases a bit of searching will find you an image that already has it.
The TougeKing points out the interesting choice of a Malay chap as a terrist in a recent Royal Marines recruiting film, with some choice realistic dialogue:
If you listen carefully, he was yelling about “aku…paling jahat di dunia ini,” roughly translated as “I am the the baddest terrorist in the world etc.”
Grab a double shot, low fat, no foam latte and sit down with Coffee Tycoon, probably the closest most of us will get to the glitzy life of a caf? owner.
This town just isn’t big enough for two female fronted serve-em-ups, so it’s head to head between Betty’s Beer Bar and Diner Dash. Holler at your girl.
