Throwback Rap Attack
Where did all the good rap suddenly come from? Considering we’ve had maybe two or three good rap records this year (Turf Talk, UGK, erm…), there suddenly seems to be plenty of nice stuff about. Aesop Rock’s None Shall Pass is decent, though maybe not quite on the standard of Labor Day or Bazooka Tooth. Kanye’s Graduation is excellent (I’m the fly Malcom X/Buy any jeans necessary) – and Stronger is a top bit of pop, despite the hatred it seems to be getting from People I Know. Percee P’s album with Madlib came out of nowhere with some of Mad’s best beats for ages (seriously, check it), and Chamillionaire’s Ultimate Victory is top notch as well – helped by a couple of great JR beats, who is on fire at the moment.
Speaking of Rotem, I thought I should accompany this with one of the tracks, and as bad ass as sampling Daft Punk is, it’s got nothing on sampling Europe.
