I’m on the train on the way up to London and the tea trolley lady is coming up the aisle. She starts serving someone on the other side of the train, and I cough, genuinely, which she clearly takes as a ’serve me’ cough. Suddenly I’m caught in the bind of wanting a tea but not wanting her to think I’m the kind of person that coughs politely to attract the attention of The Little People. I went with the tea, and lived with my shame (having the mac on the table did not aid my credibility there methinks).

So this week’s CSI: Miami featured Prez from the wire, the actor clearly enjoying moving from one hard hitting, realistic, drug based drama to another. The gritty plotline involved him being a high school art teacher that sold heroin, mixed with sweets, to children. He would pay off his kiddie dealers with trainers, which I suspect indicates a failing in maths class, as surely they had to collect the money and could realise what a lousy cut they were getting. Still, nice to see the real drug trade illuminated like that.

It’s more than just the spacey Neptunes beats or the razor sharp coke raps, though both are top draw, but there’s something about the way they throw out the dealer image that adds a different flair. A little bit more The Wire than American Gangster, perhaps.

Of course, in tribute I’ve taken the step any sane man would and produced a wack mix of some of my favourites.

For the benefit of googlers, should you happen to be wanting to use the very good Capistrano to deploy your project, and want to switch between staging or pre-production and live or production environments, the best way to handle the switch is using the Multistage facility in capistrano-ext.

It’s basically just ‘gem install capistrano-ext’, then at the top of your deploy.rb do something like:

set :stages, %w(ppd live dev) # you can use as many stages with whatever names you want here
require ‘capistrano/ext/multistage’

In the config directory create deploy/ppd.rb, deploy/live.rb and deploy/dev.rb and put in the deploy specific stuff into each one - all your tasks can still be defined in the main deploy.rb. My stage rb files are just a bunch of sets and roles (which can’t be set in tasks), and they work brilliantly.

Now when you try to do ‘cap deploy’, it will moan and say you must give it a target: “No stage specified. Please specify one of: ppd, live, dev (e.g. `cap ppd deploy’)”. Do that, and you’re away.

Miami steps it up with a bow murder based episode, featuring several of the key elements for a good show.

1) Absolutely nonsensical murder

The murderer was a high school girl trying to execute her rival with a bow and arrow. Her target was a swimmer and eCelebrity, and the plan was to stand in some bushes to the side of a pool during a race, and archery the hell out her as she dived into the water. For this race, the intended target had the outside lane, on the opposite side of the pool to the aforementioned bushes. Now clearly our budding murderess has never seen competitive swimming, as one characteristic I’ve noted is they tend to dive in at about the same time. How, through every other swimmer, she intended to hit I don’t know, but as it was the point was rendered mute when the swimmer girl hesitated, the shot missed everyone else, and a boyfriend got it in the chest instead.

2) Horatio taking it to the bad guys.

H exploited the power of the internets to bring a would-be assassin to a warehouse, having previously tricked him into stealing a gun (secretly loaded with blanks) out of the HoCaineMobile. The ginger one then proceeded to allow the guy to shoot him, safe in the knowledge that the magazine couldn’t have possibly been changed, and that his surname wasn’t Lee.

3) Boa-Vista’s deep understanding of proper procedure vis-a-vis gloves and murder weapons
