I had the pleasure of watching the latest Seagal direct to dvd yesterday, Pistol Whipped. While no way as piss-poor as the festering wart of hatred for the art of the cinema that was Attack Force, this is not the sleek continuation of the rather good Urban Justice I was hoping for, though it did have 5-6 lines worth of excellent baddy acting by (pottery by) Lance Henriksen . What made it more interesting though, is the increasing power of the Seagal ego in the dialogue. I’m pretty used to women being inexplicably attracted to the hamlike akidoka, but I did not expect the following lines (as I remember them, I’m not watching it again):

INT – Bedroom – Our hero and leading lady lay in post coital contemplation

Girl: <Big rant about the glass ceiling, followed by>… and that’s when I realised what I really needed to get ahead was a dick
Big Steve: Well, I don’t think I’d like you so much with a dick. Especially if it was bigger than mine.
Girl: I don’t think that’s possible.

I believe they call it ‘creative control’.

Trailer:

Though I missed the end due to the foul horrors of commuting, this years snooker Masters was about as good as any tournament I can think of, and the final was just perfect. It seems to be available on iplayer, which is rather nice, and is definitely worth watching – even with the slightly scary picture of Hazel Irvine as the splash image.

Note that Ronnie smashed his old cue at the start of this tournament, because he’s Ronnie, so was actually playing with a cue he’d had for about a week. Madness.

Miami turned out an absolute stunner this week. We saw the shocking return of Horatio to his labcoat wearing days – with two independent moments of Actual Work being done. The one out of Biker Boyz turned up again with a vendetta against Calleigh, and we had a double cliff hanger moment, with Horatio looking like he’s about to be gunned down (hint: he wont be) and Calleigh fulfilling the kidnap-of-the-week role.

Most of all though, the episode featured plenty of mild titillation, aided no small part by Elizabeth Berkley’s wonderful recurring roles. I have created a small pictorial to demonstrate this:

What’s most impresive is that every time I think this is the stupidest possible plot they managed to top it.

Almost every scene in this masterpiece was incredible, but I think the best summary is the clip from the end of the episode that features:

Matrix style computer animation

Further technology in H’s ClimateChangeMobile

The ridiculous super gun which was being inplausibly used as a stealthy assasin weapon at the start of the episode

The fact HoCaine is immune to explosions

A helluva one liner

So this week’s CSI: Miami featured Prez from the wire, the actor clearly enjoying moving from one hard hitting, realistic, drug based drama to another. The gritty plotline involved him being a high school art teacher that sold heroin, mixed with sweets, to children. He would pay off his kiddie dealers with trainers, which I suspect indicates a failing in maths class, as surely they had to collect the money and could realise what a lousy cut they were getting. Still, nice to see the real drug trade illuminated like that.

Miami steps it up with a bow murder based episode, featuring several of the key elements for a good show.

1) Absolutely nonsensical murder

The murderer was a high school girl trying to execute her rival with a bow and arrow. Her target was a swimmer and eCelebrity, and the plan was to stand in some bushes to the side of a pool during a race, and archery the hell out her as she dived into the water. For this race, the intended target had the outside lane, on the opposite side of the pool to the aforementioned bushes. Now clearly our budding murderess has never seen competitive swimming, as one characteristic I’ve noted is they tend to dive in at about the same time. How, through every other swimmer, she intended to hit I don’t know, but as it was the point was rendered mute when the swimmer girl hesitated, the shot missed everyone else, and a boyfriend got it in the chest instead.

2) Horatio taking it to the bad guys.

H exploited the power of the internets to bring a would-be assassin to a warehouse, having previously tricked him into stealing a gun (secretly loaded with blanks) out of the HoCaineMobile. The ginger one then proceeded to allow the guy to shoot him, safe in the knowledge that the magazine couldn’t have possibly been changed, and that his surname wasn’t Lee.

3) Boa-Vista’s deep understanding of proper procedure vis-a-vis gloves and murder weapons

Despite offering no further hope for my long awaited spin off (see title), the opening blast from CSI Miami did give us this gem on explaining why HoCaine’s hitherto unknown son had the name John Walden as father on his birth certificate: “John Walden was an alias I used while on a special task force in Pensacola 16 years ago”.

Leatherman seemed to all over this episode, their popular multitools getting some fine display work by Calleigh and Eric. Tech wise, while still having a desultory haul of monitors compared to the LCD loving CSI:NY, they have acquired a made up Microsoft table like touch device, which automatically grabbed lists of bad guys from a parole office’s blackberry. For Stu – I did look for two good images, but I couldn’t find a nice match, and I’m too lazy to cap it by hand. I was hoping to find a suitable animated gif on the interwebs, but only came up with this:

Word to the telegraph for their review incidentally, referring to CSI: Ginger as ‘The glossiest and most consistently bonkers of the CSI franchise’. That said, they do let the side down a bit by calling the opener “nutty”. It’ll be wacky and kooky next, and perhaps, dear god, even madcap.
